The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

Course Content

• The principles of advanced first aid
• Relevant health and safety guidelines
• Basic life support and CPR, including safe manual handling skills
• Basic anatomy and physiology
• Assessment of casualties and development of management plan
• Basic triage for multiple casualties
• First aid procedures for a range of scenarios, including the following:
  → allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
  → wounds and bleeding
  → burns, including thermal, chemical, friction and electrical
  → cardiac conditions, including chest pain
  → choking and airway obstruction
  → diabetes
  → drowning
  → emergency childbirth
  → envenomation
  → hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke
  → eye and ear injuries
  → head, neck and spinal injuries
  → needle stick injuries
  → poisoning and toxic substances
  → respiratory distress, including asthma
  → seizures, including epilepsy
  → shock
  → skin injuries
  → sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures
  → stroke
  → substance misuse, including common drugs and alcohol, including illicit drugs

Assessment

Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.

Accreditation

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency:
HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid

Validity

To ensure your first aid skills and knowledge remain current, re-certification must occur within 3 years of the date of the final assessment. The CPR component and Provide advanced resuscitation techniques, should be updated every twelve months from the date of assessment in order to maintain skills currency.

NOTE: SLSNSW is not a registered CRICOS provider (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) and as such it is a breach of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) for SLSNSW to deliver courses to an overseas student on a student visa (temporary graduate visa subclass 500 and 485).

Cancellation Policy

An application for refund of course fees must be made in writing to Australian Lifesaver Training. Where cancellation is made less than five (5) working days prior to the commencement of a course, 50% of the course fees will be charged. Participants who leave before finishing the course or do not commence their course without submitting a written refund request will be charged the full course fees.
